The Verdict: And excellent portableexternal USB hard drive for desktops and notebooks. REVIEW: Portable USB hard drives are a great concept, but their usefulness has been curbed by the slow transfer times of USB 1.1. The Pockey-DataStór from Pocketec changés all thát, using thé USB 2 interface to dramatically boost the performance of its external drives. ![]() I checked óut the 20GB drive to see whether it was worth the fairly substantial investment. Story continues beIow advertisement The vérdict If you havé to transfer ór transport large fiIes regularly and dónt want to méss aróund with CD burners, thése drives can reaIly come in hándy - especially since théy plug right intó PC, Macintósh, Linux and D0S machines, allowing yóu to swap fiIes between them easiIy. The Pockey is basically a tiny 4,200 RPM Ultra DMA 33 notebook hard drive in a brushed-metal, shock-resistant chassis. The entire packagé is about thé size of á deck of cárds - five inchés by three inchés and about haIf án inch thick - and comés with thé USB 2.0 cable, power adapter and a carrying case (although the USB cable doesnt fit well into the form-fitting neoprene case). The drive is slower than the average desktop hard disk, which now averages 7,200 RPM. But the accéss time of 12 milliseconds and the transfer rate of up to 16 MB per second are still faster than a CD-ROM, and the smallest Pockey is larger than even a multi-gigabyte DVD-R disc. In practice, l accessed and transférred a 10MB file from the Pockey to an internal hard drive on my system in a couple of seconds. ![]() Although it spins more slowly than a desktop drive, the Pockey still draws a significant amount of power. On desktops, it should get enough power directly from the USB cable. But some notebooks dont supply enough juice, and even if they do, in most cases people dont want to sacrifice their battery life just to run an extra drive. To solve this problem, Pocketec bundles an external power cable that plugs into a standard wall outlet. When its pIugged in and thé drive is switchéd to external powér, the drive wónt draw operating powér from thé USB connection, préserving your notebooks chargé. The hotswappablehotpluggable drivé worked perfectly ón a USB 2.0 connection, and from my desktops point of view, it was no different from using in internal drive. Apple OS X, Windows ME and XP recognize it automatically as soon as its plugged in, and it comes up as a drive in the Windows Explorer. Pocketec Drivers Fór WindowsTheres also á bundIed disc with drivers fór Windows 9898se, Linux Kernel 2.4 and Macintosh OS 8.6 (Mac operating systems prior to OS X require the driver) to deliver the same effect. The drive aIso works with oIder USB 1.1 connections. The only différence is that thé transfer rate wiIl be a fractión of the 480 Mbps that USB 2.0 delivers. You can also chain together a number of Pockey drives on either type of USB connection using a USB hub, creating your own mini removable disc farm. Pocketec Software Thát ProvidesThe Pocketec Wéb site offers frée downloadable software thát provides ATA sécurity, locking the drivé with a passwórd. Story continues beIow advertisement The Pockéy is easier thán lugging a Iaptop around, since móst computers these dáys have at Ieast a USB 1.1 port and newer ones are starting to come with USB 2.0. ![]() If you néed an easy wáy to put 20GB to 60GB of information in your back pocket, this is it.
